Fine Art vs. Photographic Paper

  • Fine Art Papers

Fine Art papers are primarily a matte finish. They are acid free and they must comply with industry standards before a manufacturer can certify them to be of archival or museum grade.

Fine Art papers are made from different materials, the two main ones being cotton and wood pulp. The demand for papers made from renewable resources has resulted in some recent introductions such as Bamboo, Sugar Cane and Kozo (Mulberry tree) to the digital photo line of papers.

Alpha cellulose paper is made from wood pulp that has been processed to remove everything but the cellulose. Paper made from wood-based pulp that has not had its lignin removed will yellow and deteriorate over time. Unfortunately, the process used to remove the lignin and other impurities creates industrial waste; however, the final product is stable and acid free. During production, acid-free paper may be treated with calcium or magnesium bicarbonate to neutralize the natural acids occurring in wood pulp. It may also be buffered to prevent the formation of additional acids.

Cotton paper is naturally acid and lignin free. It is stronger than pulp papers and is environmentally friendly in both processing and as a renewable resource. Cotton rag paper is often preferred over wood-pulp based papers for archival purposes.

  • Photo Papers

Photo papers are available in a wide range of glosses, weights and quality. Some photo papers are not considered archival grade, but can last for many years with proper care and handling.

Photo papers almost always contain Optical Brightening Agents (OBA) and are usually resin coated (RC). As a general rule, photo papers offer a larger colour gamut and DMax thus producing more colours and deeper blacks than fine art papers. These differences are not always apparent.
